Frank Furedi will diagnose our political predicament. Are we are suffering a democratic bypass as elites disconnect and the electorate goes into denial? Are the spin doctors exploiting rational ignorance to manufacture public opinion? And how long can media management act as a panacea for political vision? Closer to home, is Kevin Rudd proving to be Tony Blair Mark II?
Frank Furedi is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK. In the 1970s, he founded the Revolutionary Communist Party of Great Britain, and published Living Marxism magazine in the 1990’s. More recently Furedi writes about Western societies becoming obsessed with risk. He argues that society and universities are undergoing a politically-driven dumbing down process and have lost the ability to understand and assess risk. His books include Politics of Fear, Where have all the intellectuals gone?, Paranoid Parenting, and most recently Invitation to Terror: The Expanding Empire of the Unknown.
