Civil Disobedience - is it just for the Intelligentsia?

Thought Broker at Sydney Writers' Festival

Thursday, 17 May 4-5pm

Pier 2/3 Club Stage, Pier 2/3, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay

In heavily regulated Australia, the notion of civil disobedience as a means of effecting change has all but died out. While we participate loudly in the 'big-ticket' politics, the status quo goes largely unquestioned. We simply break the laws we don't wish to uphold. Perhaps the only determinant of whether this is considered a crime or a misdemeanor is our social strata. So do laws which apply unequally still deserve to stand unquestioned?

Thought Broker, publishers of Binge Thinking magazine, put a panel on trial in this interactive audience-centric event.

In a discussion moderated by Thought Broker, publishers of Binge Thinking magazine, the panel and audience will discuss the concept of civil disobedience as outlined by Henry David Thoreau.

The panel:

The Lawyer – Associate Prof David Hamer from Sydney University - David Hamer is an Associate Professor at Sydney Law School. He is particularly interested in how courts use evidence to reach conclusions about guilt and liability. How good a job do courts do? How many guilty people go free, and how many innocent people get convicted and imprisoned? How important is factual accuracy anyway? To what extent do facts play second fiddle to values, policies and prejudices? David has published widely on these topics in Australia and internationally.

The Social Commentator – Cassandra Wilkinson – Cass Wilkinson is the author of Don't Panic - Nearly Everything is Better Than You Think published by Pluto Press in 2007. Her speech at the 2008 Battle of Ideas on internet censorship has been downloaded several thousand times and carries a five star YouTube rating. She has written on Happiness Economics in Happiness [Spinney Press 2008] and on effective programs for the poor in Right Social Justice [Connor Court 2012]. She is currently an opinion contributor to The Australian newspaper and regular commentator for Sky News Agenda and ABC The Drum.

The Historian – Dr Tony Moore - Dr Tony Moore is Director of the National Centre for Australian Studies, Monash University, where he is a Senior Lecturer in cultural history and media studies. His career spans publishing, journalism and documentary making at the ABC. Tony's latest book is Death or Liberty: rebels and radicals transported to Australia 1788-1868 (Pier 9 2010). A self-confessed libertarian social democrat, Tony is a Fellow of the Centre for Policy Development and former president of the NSW Fabian Society.

About our speaker

Daniel Ben-Amiis a journalist and commentator based in London. His book 'Ferraris For All' ruffled feathers by arguing that economic progress should be defended against attacks from the 'no-growth' sustainability set. His earlier book, 'Cowardly Capitalism' argues that the consensus is wrong on financial markets, which he suggests are characterised by risk aversion rather than risk taking.

THE BATTLE OF THE THINK TANKS

Australia's most prolific and influential think tanks will duke it out over whose ideology and vision for the future should prevail.

Pitting speakers from social democrat and progressive think tanks against their conservative and libertarian counterparts, Thought Broker will once again present incendiary debate to a well-lubricated audience.

In the blue corner we have Tim Wilson of the Institute of Public Affairs and Dr Oliver Hartwich from the Centre for Independent Studies.
And, in the red corner David Hetherington, Per Capita and Miriam Lyons, Centre for Policy Development.

At a time when ideological purity has hit the skids and political debate and policy implementation are mired in spin and short-termism, this event will explore the importance of long term thinking in Australia's public debate.

The economist's debate: Is the Housing Boom a Bursting Bubble?

He started his financial career the old fashioned way: on the ground floor. Dan founded and edited a private financial newsletter on small-capitalization stocks in 1998, leading over 35,000 subscribers to profits in dynamic new American companies during the height of the bull market. In 2000, he became the editor of Strategic Investment, the flagship publication of internationally known Agora Publishing. His high-level, macro-economic and stock market forecasts are read by more than 35,000 high-dollar investors and fund managers in over 70 countries. His reporting and analysis for The Daily Reckoning is read by more than 350,000 people regularly. Dan is also a regular columnist for Money Week, a London-based financial publication, and his 2005 book The Bull Hunter was a best-seller.

Rory Robertson is Macquarie Bank’s Interest-Rate Strategist responsible for analysing the Australian, US and global economies, with a particular focus on the monetary policies of the RBA, the Fed and other central banks. He has spent more than two decades in the business of watching economies and markets, previously holding positions at the RBA and BT Australia's investment bank. In a decade and a half as a market forecaster, Rory has built his reputation as an authoritative central-bank watcher whose understanding of policy frameworks and economic fundamentals regularly generates useful insights on the outlook for interest rates, equity markets and exchange rates.  Along the way, Rory has developed an expertise on housing markets.  His famous 2008 peak-to-trough bet on house prices with doomsday economist Steve Keen ended with Dr Keen “legging it” about 230k from Canberra to Mt Kosciuszko in April this year, after house prices fell by only about 5% before rising to new highs (http://www.keenwalk.com.au).  Rory’s strong view on house prices remains that the extremists – in both directions – will continue to be wrong.
